Rough translation: “And this world is like a shadow for the man. He cannot overtake (catch) it even if he walks the whole endless span of time for it. And Allah is done with the provisions of all creation and its types: in quantity and in quality… in time and in place… It will be neither increased nor decreased. So we should be content and take from it with the (right) lawful way. And we should not ask for Allah’s disobedience.”
These lines are simply beautiful. The world has been described as a shadow. So let’s talk about shadows a bit. We’ve all chased our own shadow sometime or other in our life, right?
Shadows are those things which are attached to us and we see them all the time. And yet they are hollow, they’re not solid stuff. Moreover they seem as if they are just within hand’s reach but actually they’re not. Plus they are fascinating to look at. Why else would painters stalk them so much? And it’s childish to run after shadows.
Same is the case with this world. It’s with us all the time. It’s fascinating yet hollow. It seems that it is within one’s reach but it’s not. You can never catch it. By the phrase you cannot catch it, it means you never get this world (read: wealth in this world, contentment in this world etc.) so much so that it would satisfy you. You always want it more and more but never enough that would satisfy you. You are always out to catch some more of it.
BUT why should we run after the mirage of shadows and get all frustrated when Allah is already done with the provisions of all creation? (Provision includes all material and non-material things).
Allah has written and pre-decided what each and every creation, that is here already or is yet to come, will get as their share of provisions (rizq), in terms of its quantity, quality, the place in which they will get it and the time at which they will get it. And that rizq will be neither increased nor decreased.
So since everything is predestined and we will get all what is written for us, should we really run after it like crazy? And get all wound up when we do not get what we want?
No. Instead we should be content with whatever comes our way and take it in the proper lawful way. And we should not ask for Allah’s disobedience by being discontent.
Just knowing all this makes you feel content, doesn’t it?
