Names and Attributes to KNOW

While reading the preface I thought to myself , this book can’t get any better. But surprisingly, it did. :)

Yes, we have started the first chapter. Alhamdulillah.

It’s called,

“Fiqh of the names and attributes of Allah”

And we’re on its first part,

“Fiqh of knowledge (‘ilm) of Allah and His names and His attributes”

Guess what? This ‘ilm is compulsory to gain.

Allah Himself says in the Quran,

“So know, [O Muhammad], that there is no deity except Allah and ask forgiveness for your sin and for the believing men and believing women. And Allah knows of your movement and your resting place.” [Muhammad 19]

“Know that Allah is severe in penalty and that Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.” [Al-Ma’ida 98]

So know about it. Really!

[Roughly translated:] “`Ilm of Allah and His Names and His Attributes is the most honorable of all the `uloom and its dignity and majesty is absolute.

And `ilm of Allah is the origin of all things, till the one who recognizes the reality of ma`rifah (recognition) with (the help of) `ilm of Allah, he, with the recognition of Names and Attributes of Allah, seeks evidence upon whatever He does, and upon His commands of Shari`ah, and upon His orders of norms and propriety, because He is the One to whom belongs Glory, He does not do anything that is not appropriate to His Names and Attributes.”

This so makes sense that I was shocked. I mean seriously, why don’t we get this knowledge? Don’t we want to know that who created us? Amazing, no?

Knowing His names and attributes in the true sense would also make us know why does what happen in our life. You’d trust Him. Know the secret of life by knowing His names and attributes. Great people strive and spend their lives trying to discover the secrets, mysteries, philosophies of life. Beat ’em all. Know this stuff. Strive for it, achieve the level of certainty.

And then, we keep complaining our eman (faith) doesn’t increase and our salah (prayer) is without khushu’ and we can’t stay away from sin… Well, how can we achieve all this when we don’t even know the one for whom we have to do this stuff? How stupid is that.

Get. To. Know. Him.
Recognize him.

And anyway,

Eman (faith) is not only a statement made by the tongue without recognition of the Rabb (Master) and His names and His attributes.”

So recognition is important. Spending and striving for it… Until…

“Until he reaches the level of yaqeen (certainty). And whenever recognition of his Rabb (Master) increases, his eman (faith) increases. And whenever it decreases, eman (faith) decreases.”

I feel so happy that we’re going to learn and understand this knowledge at last. I mean this is ‘the’ thing to learn. I can’t emphasize enough on how important it is.

Why aren’t children taught this stuff? Why aren’t there presentations on this? Why isn’t interesting literature written on this? Why aren’t documentaries made on this branch of knowledge? This should be the basic thing that should be taught and ingrained in kids when they’re born. This is what should be taught in primary school.

We feel proud teaching them ABC as soon as they gather their wits. Please teach them this ‘ilm. And stop complaining. This is what’ll save them (and us) in both the worlds. InshaAllah.

    • Wa’alaikumussalam warahmatullahi wabarakaatuh.

There’s a book called “The Beautiful Names and Attributes of Allah – Important Principles to Remember” by Shaykh Muhammad bin Salih Al-‘Uthaimeen. It’s in Arabic language too.
Also, keep checking the blog for updates on this topic, inshaAllah. :)
