The Fifth Principle:
With regards to Allah’s Names, we must limit ourselves to what is mentioned in revealed texts – the Qur’an and the Sunnah. We must neither add to nor take away from those names. The human mind cannot grasp or understand what Allah – with His Might, Majesty and Magnificence – deserves in terms of names. Therefore, we must restrict ourselves to those names that are mentioned in revealed texts. Allah said:
“And follow not (O man i.e. say not, or do not witness not, etc) that of which you have no knowledge (e.g. one’s saying: ‘I have seen’, while in fact he has not seen, or ‘I have heard’, while he has not heard). Verily! The hearing and the sight, and the heart, of each of those you will be questioned (by Allah).” [Qur’an, 17:36]
And in another verse, He said:
“Say (O Muhammad صلى الله على وسلم): (But) the things that my Lord has indeed forbidden are Al-Fawahish (great evil sins, every kind of unlawful sexual intercourse, etc.) whether committed openly or secretly, sins (of all kinds), unrighteous oppression, joining partners (in worship) with Allah for which He has given no authority, and saying things about Allah of which you have no knowledge.” [Qur’an, 07:33]
Also, giving Allah a name that He has not given Himself, and rejecting a name that He has given Himself, is crime and grave violation against the rights that Allah has over us. Thus we should show good manners and know our rightful places, by limiting ourselves to only those names that Allah deserves – the names that He and He alone, has named Himself with.
