A Little Worth A Million

The world that we live in is a myriad of complex phenomenons and mysteries of life. Every moment something new is happening. One moment someone is happy, the other he is sad. Someone might be born with a silver spoon in his mouth and end up living almost on the breadline. This constant change brings struggle. Each one of is struggling in one direction or the other.

There are those who are striving to make their life comfortable in this world, earning money day and night. Some get successful and do end up earning a lot, which sometimes makes them arrogant and tyrannical. While some fail and this disappointment and sadness brought on by poverty, eats them up from inside.

Then there are those who strive for the hereafter:

:والذين اجتهدوا لكسب الآخرة قسمان أيضَا

Those people who strive to earn the hereafter are of two types as well:

The first type,

From those is the one who toils in worship and good deeds only, so when he dies his deeds come to an end except for three, as Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said: “when a man dies, his deeds come to an end, except for three: A continuous charity, knowledge by which people derive benefit, pious offspring who prays for him” (Muslim)

These type of people are good, they focus on themselves and worship so they earn something for the hereafter which is eternal. But are they doing the best investment that is out there?

The second type,

From those is the one who toils in worship and calling people towards Allah, and educating the ummah (people) about the commands of the deen (Islam), so his deeds are continuous, because every person who got guidance through him or learned something through him, then he gets the same reward as him.

This person has the better deal, of course. He is not only focusing on himself but also on others around him. He makes sure others are also getting the message and so whoever benefits from him, this person gets the reward as well? Isn’t that amazing?  For example, Aisha told Sara about the benefits of saying alhamdulillah and why we should be grateful to Allah, now whenever Sara feels grateful and says alhamdulillah, Aisha gets the reward too.

Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said: “He who called (people) to righteousness, there would be reward (assured) for him like the rewards of those who adhered to it, without their rewards being diminished in any respect. And he who called (people) to error, he shall have to carry (the burden) of its sin, like those who committed it, without their sins being diminished in any respect.” (Muslim)

For example, Ali told Bilal to pray 5 times a day and gave him the message in such a way that Bilal was moved enough to start praying regularly. Now whenever Bilal prays, not only does Bilal get the reward but Ali gets the reward as well. And if Bilal conveys the message ahead and tells other to pray and they start praying, then Ali gets their reward as well (and those people get their own reward too, of course).

Similarly, Naveed encouraged Hammad to not pray while at work or with friends. Now whenever Hammad does not pray due to the influence of Naveed, Naveed gets sinful too.

So how many in this (recorded) sheet will be from the Muslims and the ones who pray, and the callers toward Allah’s way and the ones who fight in Allah’s cause, and the scholars and the teachers, and the ones who fast and the ones who give charity, and the ones who perform Hajj and the ones who perform ‘umrah?

The sheet that is being talked about is the sheet that is recording all your deeds. So imagine if in your record you get rewarded for those good deeds that you never did but you’re only being rewarded for those because you guided or helped someone else do them. Maybe your one sentence said to someone made him go on Hajj, maybe your one word made someone resolve and become a teacher of true knowledge.

Never underestimate any good deed that you are doing in the way of dawah (calling towards Allah). Who knows what results it will bring forth even long after your death! Do not spend time on yourself only. Spend on others whatever you can, of your time, your energies, your wealth, your knowledge. Direct people to good always. Even if you yourself don’t know much, then tell them of a person, of a place that can teach them a lot of good. You can point the way to the masjid, you can tell of a website that imparts authentic Islamic knowledge, you can share an article that tells about the oneness of God with one who doesn’t believe in it, you can tell of a poor family who are in need of someone’s charity.

On the Day of Resurrection, we will badly be in need of any small good deed that can save us. Every little deed will be worth a million. We need to remember this is our need. Not Allah’s. We are not indispensable. If we are lazy, arrogant or shy and don’t do what we’re supposed to do i.e. give dawah, then Allah will bring new people who will spread His Deen. The work of this Deen has never stopped once since the past 1400 years or so. It will continue with or without you and me.

If you know a little something, then convey it ahead through whatever means. It’s an honour that you have been chosen by Allah to help spread the true knowledge of His Deen. :)

Life will be a struggle, this way or that way. The question is, what are you struggling for?

P.S. Do you have a story to share where someone did dawah to you and it changed your life or you did the same to someone? We would love to hear it and be inspired!
