On Knowing Allah – Part 3: Call for Volunteers

Image

If you’ve read the first two blog posts in this series, (if not, you should probably do that first, here and here), you’ll have come to the following conclusions:

  • In-depth knowledge of Allah’s names and attributes is the highest of all knowledge and gaining it is an obligation – not an option!
  • It is extremely ungrateful to go on using Allah’s blessings and not even bother to know who He is
  • So the knowledge and true understanding of Allah’s names and attributes, and consequently of His actions, His commands and His decree, is the first thing that we should have learned – or been taught.
  • We may think we know Allah because we were (most of us) born and raised Muslim, but in reality, we barely even know the meanings of His names, and have no deep, conceptual understanding of His attributes.

Now, from the above conclusions, we realize that we’re in a fair bit of a mess. So is all of our society (talking about Pakistan), and most of the Muslim ummah.

Think back to your school days. Most of us have had our parents scold us, punish us, praise us, reward us, all based on one crucial factor: our grades! (This is especially true if you’re Asian). We’ve had to cram and learn and write and recite books upon books, usually full of information that we will have no use for in all the rest of our lives, with topics such as the fishing industry of Hong Kong, for example (we really studied this in 8th grade Geography).

On the other hand, how many school kids actually know about Allah? For example, how many children (or even adults, for that matter) have a strong concept of His justice, in duniya and akhirah? How many know of His mercy, His love, His wrath, and His punishment and His reward? Go back to Part 2 to refresh the reason we say that we don’t really know Allah.

So the point is, we need to do something about this. Sure, we need to educate ourselves on this topic, and inshaAllah educate our families, friends and kids. But is that enough? And more importantly, is that all there is in our capacity to do?

Look around in a bookstore – a good Islamic bookstore, if you will. You can count on one finger the number of books that are there about the names and attributes of Allah. Browse mainstream television programs/channels. You probably won’t find even one that is building the right concept of Allah’s names and attributes. Go through websites – sure, there’s a plethora of information out there, but how much of it is understandable, well-presented, authentic, and targeted at children/young people/amateurs as opposed to really advanced learners/scholars?

The situation is terrible, but we can’t sit around complaining. We need to do something about it. If we can’t find good books, we have to write them. If there are no good websites, we need to design them. If there are no sessions/classes building the correct concept of Allah and His attributes, we need to conduct them! Because when we can clearly see that a crucial piece of work is missing from the tapestry of Islamic efforts going on globally, we will be answerable for not doing that work ourselves – especially if Allah has given us the ability and the resources. And trust me, we can do it. We’ve done much harder work than this for university projects, haven’t we? (Entrepreneurship, marketing, event management, web design, literature projects and what not – let’s be honest with ourselves instead of making excuses!)

So, here’s a call for volunteers. Let’s get together and brainstorm and come up with ideas for (a) how we can ourselves understand the names and attributes of Allah as they should be understood, and (b) how we can spread this knowledge out to others in the most effective way possible. Then let’s put those ideas into action! Maybe some of us can write short articles about certain attributes/names of Allah. Some of us can make presentations. Some could make handouts to give out to people in schools/malls/resorts etc. Some of us (especially those linked to Islamic organizations) can arrange sessions or classes or design courses. Some of us can design a blog or website that brings the best resources together. Some of us can make posters/infographics that explain certain aspects of a particular name or attribute of Allah. Some of us can help focus and coordinate the whole effort. Others can be responsible for making these ideas reach other Islamic organizations globally, or even work with organizations to design programmes that they can carry out, to educate people about their Creator.

So, put your hands up, who wants to be a part of this effort? Let’s stop complaining and start acting – let’s work together to link people to their Creator!

On Knowing Allah – Part 2: Come Off it, Of Course I know Allah!

allahs-99-names

[Ideally, read Part 1 of this series first, if you haven’t! :) ]

Reading a number of recent blog posts here about how important it is to know Allah, and how much we ignore this crucial piece of knowledge, some of you may start to wonder what the big deal really is. We know Allah already, don’t we? We know He made us and all that is in the heavens and the earth. We know He owns everything. We know He knows everything. We know He controls everything. Many of us memorized the ninety-nine names of Allah when we were little. Well, then, what’s the trouble?

My first point is that memorizing the ninety-nine names of Allah hardly qualifies as knowing Him – or even as really knowing the names, for that matter.

Here’s a quick test: what does it mean to say Allah is al-Jabbar (the Compellor)? What do we really mean when we say Allah is al-Fattaah (the Opener)? What does it mean to say He is al-Latif (the Subtle One)? Why is he ad-Daarr (the Creator of the Harmful)? How many of these names can you and I even translate, let alone truly know the in-depth meaning of?

My second point is that there is a difference between knowing and understanding.

This book (Fiqh ul Quloob) is not merely about ilm (knowledge), although that is the first step, but is about fiqh (understanding). So we may have memorized the names of Allah, but their meaning is not truly, deeply drilled down inside of us. Each time we ask, “why did Allah do this to me”, or “why doesn’t Allah listen to my duas”, we are negating some of His attributes – of His justice and mercy. Each time we criticize the laws of stoning to death or cutting off the thief’s hand for being too brutual, we are negating His attribute of wisdom and His attribute of justice, His wrath and His punishment. Each time we casually commit a sin, each time we lie and think nothing of it, each time we break a promise, leave a salaah, or induge in haram and think it’s okay, we negate His attribute of being wrathful, and of being watchful and all-knowing of our sins. Each time the Muslim-born agnostic questions, “If there’s a God, how come He lets children starve in Africa?”, he is mistaking the meaning of Allah’s love, and ignoring all together His test, His qadr (decree) and again His ultimate justice.

In how many of us, then, has the true meaning of the attributes of Allah been truly drilled? Can we then claim to know Him, and can we claim that there’s no need to study the names and attributes of Allah any more than what we already know?

Explaining what TRUE faith is, the author says,

Meaning that the reality of iman is that the slave recognizes Allah and exerts his utmost effort to understand His names and attributes, and to recognize His blessings, حتى يبلغ درجة اليقين – until he reaches the state of yaqeen: unshakeable, deep-rooted belief based on true understanding! Are we at that stage of yaqeen yet? I think not, for most of us! That is why it is such a big deal. Feel free to question or comment!

asmaaulhusna

Bismillah.

So, I’m overwhelmed. As the first chapter of Fiqh ul Quloob starts, the very first sub-topic, about knowing Allah and His names and attributes, leaves me reeling with shock. Let me tell you why.

This chapter tells us something we have ignored for all of our lives: that knowing Allah swt, and His names and attributes, is the height of all knowledge. It is the most crucial, un-miss-able piece of the puzzle of life. It is an obligation – not something optional! You can read more about the obligation and importance of knowing Allah here and here. What I’m going to talk about in this post is another angle – that not only is it a hukm of Allah to know Him, but we are also morally obliged to recognize Him!

Here is why:

[Rough translation]: “And it is not appropriate for the slave, upon whom the blessings of Allah are constant, and His bounty on him is great (and comes) from every direction, that he remain ignorant of his Rabb, and turns away from the recognition of His names and attributes and actions.”

Imagine receiving a beautiful gift, something that you desperately wanted at that very moment – will  you not be desperate to know who sent it? Will you not want to rush to thank the sender? And if you simply accept it and use it and never spare a thought for the sender, will you not be the most selfish, ungrateful wretch?

Now, imagine. Imagine if Allah withholds oxygen from you for the next thirty seconds. Imagine the horror of not being able to breathe. Imagine the searing in your lungs, the wild beating of your heart, the panic in your mind. What wouldn’t you give to be able to draw a single breath? Well, then who sends a continuous supply of clean air to us?  Who lets our heart and lungs and brain work in perfect coordination, every second of every day, to deliver oxygen to every part of our bodies?

Next. Imagine you’re walking up the stairs one day. And suddenly, your feet just stop. They refuse to budge. No matter how hard you try, you just can’t lift your foot. Where will you go? What will you do? Who will you call for help? Can all the doctors and medicines in the world return life to your feet if Allah takes it away? But no. Each time we put one foot down, Allah lets us pick up the other one. Ever thanked Him? I can’t remember if I did!

Another situation. Imagine you enter your house one day, expecting mom to welcome you with a kiss, serve you hot food, and pamper you generally, as she does every day. But instead, the second you step into the house, weary and wanting comfort, your parents throw you out. Sounds absurd, but if you think about it, who is the one putting your love in their hearts? Who is the one making their hearts inclined towards letting you live in their house and use up their wealth? If Allah takes away their love and sense of responsibility, is there any court of law in the world that can return you your former comforts? But He does not. Every day they go on loving us, providing for us, caring for us. Every day we have a roof over our heads, a comfortable bed, and delicious food. Who is ensuring these provisions and comforts and security?

There is an infinite number of examples of how much and how constantly Allah takes care of us. Read into the body’s immune system sometime. It’s amazing how Allah has programmed our bodies to safeguard themselves against hundreds of attacks every single day. There are actual standing armies inside, actually trained to protect against the myriad threats they body faces!

So the point is, who is the one safeguarding our hearts? Who is the one safeguarding our souls? Who is the one safeguarding our lives?

Indeed we live in a rain of gifts, coming, as the author says, “from every direction”,  and yet we make no effort to get to know the Sender – our Lord – the One Who created us – who gave us our health and wealth and family and friends and privileges and comforts!

And the most scary part is, that even now, even after realizing all of this, some (if not all) of us think, yeah, I’ll definitely study the names and attributes of Allah – if I get time.

What will it take to push us into action? Why are we so heedless? May Allah make us of those who get pushed into action immediately when they realize their lapses, and stay constant on it throughout their lives!

(To know what I mean when I say we don’t know Allah, read part two of this series: On Knowing Allah – Part 2: Come off it, of course I know Allah!)

Names and Attributes to KNOW

Bismillah.

While reading the preface I thought to myself , this book can’t get any better. But surprisingly, it did. :)

Yes, we have started the first chapter. Alhamdulillah.

It’s called,

“Fiqh of the names and attributes of Allah”

And we’re on its first part,

“Fiqh of knowledge (‘ilm) of Allah and His names and His attributes”

Guess what? This ‘ilm is compulsory to gain.

Allah Himself says in the Quran,

“So know, [O Muhammad], that there is no deity except Allah and ask forgiveness for your sin and for the believing men and believing women. And Allah knows of your movement and your resting place.” [Muhammad 19]

“Know that Allah is severe in penalty and that Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.” [Al-Ma’ida 98]

So know about it. Really!

[Roughly translated:] “`Ilm of Allah and His Names and His Attributes is the most honorable of all the `uloom and its dignity and majesty is absolute.

And `ilm of Allah is the origin of all things, till the one who recognizes the reality of ma`rifah (recognition) with (the help of) `ilm of Allah, he, with the recognition of Names and Attributes of Allah, seeks evidence upon whatever He does, and upon His commands of Shari`ah, and upon His orders of norms and propriety, because He is the One to whom belongs Glory, He does not do anything that is not appropriate to His Names and Attributes.”

This so makes sense that I was shocked. I mean seriously, why don’t we get this knowledge? Don’t we want to know that who created us? Amazing, no?

Knowing His names and attributes in the true sense would also make us know why does what happen in our life. You’d trust Him. Know the secret of life by knowing His names and attributes. Great people strive and spend their lives trying to discover the secrets, mysteries, philosophies of life. Beat ’em all. Know this stuff. Strive for it, achieve the level of certainty.

And then, we keep complaining our eman (faith) doesn’t increase and our salah (prayer) is without khushu’ and we can’t stay away from sin… Well, how can we achieve all this when we don’t even know the one for whom we have to do this stuff? How stupid is that.

Get. To. Know. Him.
Recognize him.

And anyway,

Eman (faith) is not only a statement made by the tongue without recognition of the Rabb (Master) and His names and His attributes.”

So recognition is important. Spending and striving for it… Until…

“Until he reaches the level of yaqeen (certainty). And whenever recognition of his Rabb (Master) increases, his eman (faith) increases. And whenever it decreases, eman (faith) decreases.”

I feel so happy that we’re going to learn and understand this knowledge at last. I mean this is ‘the’ thing to learn. I can’t emphasize enough on how important it is.

Why aren’t children taught this stuff? Why aren’t there presentations on this? Why isn’t interesting literature written on this? Why aren’t documentaries made on this branch of knowledge? This should be the basic thing that should be taught and ingrained in kids when they’re born. This is what should be taught in primary school.

We feel proud teaching them ABC as soon as they gather their wits. Please teach them this ‘ilm. And stop complaining. This is what’ll save them (and us) in both the worlds. InshaAllah.
